Jeff Zucker introduced his 70, 20, 10 advertising strategy at the "Congress" here in DC. The highlight of the day playing with the interactive shopping cart by "SmartCart" allowing shoppers to view advertisements right on an LCD screen on the front of the cart. Imagine walking down the milk aisle and then seeing an oreo cookie advertisement. Very cool indeed. Here is a picture of me and my Capitol Advertising team at the event.

Fox Biz Buzz-- Will CNBC benchwarm your ass for going on Fox Business News?

Finally, another channel to click through. Fox Business News went head to head with CNBC back in October and reaches 30 million households compared to CNBC which reaches nearly ten times that amount. I enjoy Jim Cramer's Mad Money enough to stick with CNBC. He is CNBC's life vest like Howard Stern is to Sirius Satellite Radio. The show Happy Hour on Fox Business News is great for college students new to the game and for people at the bar who enjoy the eye candy. Watch out if you are are a guest of CNBC because rumor has it that they threaten to bench guests who have appeared on Fox Business News. But that's just the cost of doing business.

Buy, Buy, Buy. That was the overwhelming consensus among investors and tv personalities last week when talking about technology stocks. I want off that bandwagon. Google's stock fell today another 4.8%. Many people's fantasies including mine of Google reaching that $2,000 mark have been shattered by this turn of the market. Google knows that to compete in technology it must diversify its assets. So far they are in talks with T-mobile over partnership with the Gphone, buddying up with the social networking site Myspace, and expanded its relationship with the Yellow Pages Group all within the last month. As a conservative investor, I say "Wait, wait, wait" for Google to hit $600 and then "Buy, buy, buy."

XM misses the market

Why did it take three years for XM Satellite Radio to hire Rob Johnson and get with the Research program? This question was burning in the back of my head during the entire presentation. Not until 2005, until Mr. Johnson came on the scene was this question asked, “Why isn’t there a marketing database?” Rob has spent the last two years strategizing how to get data on the consumers. Within the first three minutes of his presentation he said that the average customer profile was a “47 year old white male.” He has come a long way in two years, or has he? XM outsourced the market research to Arbitron, an accredited market researcher that’s been around for a while. The problem with Arbitron is that it takes almost nine months after the data request to receive any findings. This delay made it impossible to measure the success of a show’s ratings. Radio is a live media vehicle, and up to the minute information is necessary in determining a channel’s success. In 2007, XM dropped Arbitron and took a risk with an unaccredited market researcher called OTX. OTX allowed XM to get the data much faster which gives them a competitive advantage over Sirius. Research is a core value to most companies. Research aids programming. Why does XM only employ two researchers then? Researchers are responsible for Marketing (Brand Research, Copy and Messaging Research, Ad Tracking, and New Activation), Product Development (Pricing and Future Development), Ad Sales (Ad effectiveness, Subscriber Insights), and Listener Care (Research Customer Service). Two staff and unpaid interns tackle this? Oh, please. Hopefully with the upcoming merge, Sirius will bring more than Howard Stern to the table. How about bringing along their research team? In order for XM to remain competitive, no, not even remain competitive. In order for XM to continue to be profitable they must make a greater attempt to understand their consumer. Qualititaive focus groups, quantitative research studies, tracking studies, and secondary research sources are just a small solution to the company’s growing target market. A moving target, and I believe at least from what I heard tonight, XM misses the mark.
